In the name of research, I’ve gone to a couple of singles events hosted by a popular dating site. You know, they’re the events you see on TV commercials, take your dating offline and all that. And everyone in the commercials is smiling and getting along really well and just oh so excited.
Maybe I have a different worldview than others, but what strikes me most about these events is that they’re just kind of sad. You look around at all these people all funneled together into one place with the common link of being members of the same online dating site. Everyone’s there looking for roughly the same thing: companionship in some form or another. Or an overpriced cocktail. Maybe both. And this need, this desire to find someone to call your other half cuts across all types of people. At the first event I went to I recognized a woman I’d went to college with. She’d lived on my floor freshman year, she was popular, in a sorority. But here she was, just like me, at the same event just looking for a guy to talk to.
